The Tile Installation Video Library Downloads

Tile Installation Video Library is a collection of short, comprehensive video topics that were written, produced, and directed by Michael Byrne to address a common problem faced by both professional and do-it-yourself tile installers: how to install materials properly and according to the latest tile industry standards.

According to Byrne, the only differences between the way pro and DIY installers approach tiling are time and tools: "Pros are always pressed for time, and DIY installers are often short on tools and equipment, but whether the installation is pro or amateur, tiles need to be carefully chosen, they need the right adhesive contact, and they need to be protected by dense grout joints. As well, to keep any warranties intact, each installation needs to be properly detailed. There is no such thing as a pro or DIY way to install tile - only the recognized standards. I produced these downloads so that all installers could have quick access to the latest methods and techniques".

The Tile Installation Video Library was designed as a companion to Byrne's new tile installation book, edited by JLC's Steve Bliss and due for release in 2010. Future library topics include the latest in surface prep, tools, materials, waterproofing, crack isolation and custom detailing. New titles will be released as soon as they are available for downloading. "We produced the first three titles in the series as a response to requests from both contractors and the DIY side. We still maintain a request list, and as shooting and editing continues, plan to release more titles to help installers of all stripes produce better quality tile work more efficiently".

Hardwood Floor Mosaic Inlay
, CD-ROM,
© 2005 Michael Byrne

This floor installation won a SPECTRUM award from the tile industry and it features hand-molded tiles and an intricate expansion joint that allows movement between the relatively stable tile inlay and the constantly moving wood strip floor. The installation also features a crack isolation membrane that was added to strengthen the floor and protect the expensive art tiles from normal structural movement, and movement within the wood planks caused by fluctuations in humidity and temperature. Wood floors inlayed with tile can be problematic because of the differential of movement between the two materials, but in this presentation, Michael focuses on the junction of the tile and wood, and how the appearance of cracks can be eliminated. The disc explains how to layout irregular tile inlays, how to sculpt a smooth wood edge, how to install a crack isolation membrane, and how to work with flexible sealants and caulks that are color and texture-matched to the grout. This CD is a must-see for any installer who wants to go beyond the usual squared-off installations and jump into the realm of truly custom work. Recommended for experienced installers.

2008 Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation

The 45th edition of the technical handbook considered the bible of the tile industry.  The methods and information found in this essential guide are developed by consensus committees organized and overseen by the Tile Council of North America, an association of tile and tile installation material manufacturers and suppliers. In 2005, the Tile Council of America changed its name to reflect the composition of its members: The Tile Council of North America. The committees tasked with the job of improving installation standards and methods are comprised of specialists from all sectors of the building industry--not just tile. Representatives from the wood, concrete, gypsum, plumbing, electrical, labor, design, and housing industries have come together for almost sixty years to produce this helpful and informative booklet. If you don't have a copy--you are not serious about tile installation.

ANSI A108 Tile Installation Standards

When you are ready to dig deep for the finer points of tile installation, this is the booklet for you. Not nearly as user-friendly as the TCA Handbook, the AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE INSTALLATION OF CERAMIC TILE (ANSI A108) nevertheless is both the TCA Handbook's foundation and glossary. The TCNA acts as the secretary, and many TCNA committee members may also be found working on the ANSI A108 committees. Although not organized like the TCA Handbook, its specifications are arranged in a logical order and cover every aspect of tile installation. An absolute must for any professional specifying tile, or any installer who wants to know the whole story.  Includes various strength and performance tests recognized by the tile industry. Highly recommended for any tile professional.
